The experience
Most visitors to Mauritius never leave the beach. You will. Lion Mountain is one of the most rewarding hikes on the island β a real adventure that takes you through sugarcane fields, dense tropical vegetation, and increasingly dramatic rocky ridges before delivering a summit view that stops everyone in their tracks.
What to expect
Your guide meets you at your hotel or accommodation in the southeast of Mauritius. After a full briefing β route overview, safety instructions, and equipment check β the hike begins at the trailhead near Grand Port. The first section winds through local vegetation, giving you time to warm up and spot endemic birds and plants your guide will point out along the way.
As the terrain becomes steeper and more technical, your guide stays by your side, helping through the more challenging sections and sharing the fascinating history and geology of this ancient volcanic landscape. The final approach involves some exhilarating hand-and-foot scrambling along narrow ridges β nothing dangerous, but genuinely exciting.
At the summit, the effort becomes instantly worthwhile. The Indian Ocean stretches in every direction. The lagoon glows turquoise below. Γle aux Aigrettes, Lighthouse Island, and Mahebourg Bay lie spread out before you. Take your time β this moment deserves it.
The descent
After taking in the views and capturing the memories, you'll descend the same route under your guide's careful supervision β the descent is managed and safe. The activity ends back at the trailhead, where your transport returns you to your accommodation.

This hike is ideal for moderately fit adults and teenagers who want a real outdoor adventure. No prior hiking experience is required, but you should be comfortable with steep terrain and some hand-assisted scrambling near the summit. The mountain is best enjoyed on dry days β your guide will advise if conditions are unsuitable.
