Description
Your journey begins with The only location honoring the French-British Battle of Vieux Grand Port in 1810 is the Naval Museum. This conflict, which lasted several days, was a substantial British attempt to conquer the island. Both sides' injured soldiers received medical attention in the region throughout the fighting.
The museum preserves and displays the story of this important fight. If you have an interest for history, the Naval Museum is absolutely worth a visit.
Next up is the Ferney valley, an enchanting region with a rich history, that has long been a popular spot for those interested in the island’s cultural legacy. It promises to nurture community well-being by weaving agriculture and nature into daily life. La Vallée de Ferney is a genuine success in conservation and a benchmark for sustainable living. This biodiverse haven safeguards endangered native woodlands and is home to over 700 plant species, including the rare ebony, Eugenia bojeri (bois clou), takamaka, araucaria, and the iconic traveller’s tree (Ravenala). Whether you want to hike among unique trees and birds, participate in a guided tour, or savor local dishes, La Vallée de Ferney provides a rich and memorable experience.
The second to last stop, Rault Biscuit Factory in Mahébourg, is the place where traditional cassava biscuits (“Biscuit Manioc”) are made. Globally, these cookies are viewed as distinct and strongly tied to regional traditions. Originating around 1735, Mahe de Labourdonnais initially utilized cassava as animal feed, which subsequently evolved into a primary food source for laborers.
Even now, the biscuits are made with the same traditional techniques and come in an array of flavours. This remarkable location is surely worth exploring, as it takes you back in history and highlights a part of Mauritian culture.
The last destination is the village of Mahebourg, where you can explore the local shops and enjoy the stunning waterfront views.
