Description
Start your day on one of Mauritius’ most meaningful mountains. This guided group hike follows the historic “Slave Route” of Le Morne Brabant, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a symbol of resistance and freedom.
We meet at the base of Le Morne in the early morning hours. In summer we start very early, and believe us, you’ll be happy we do: the mountain is exposed to the sun all morning and later it becomes very hot on the rocks. Your local guide welcomes the group, gives a short safety briefing and checks that everyone feels comfortable with the level of the hike.
The first part of the trail is a steady walk through coastal forest, and the first views over the turquoise lagoon. We keep a calm, regular pace so the group can stay together and enjoy the scenery.
The second part of the route is more challenging: steeper, more rocky, with some short scrambling sections where you’ll use your hands. Your guide is always there to show you where to place your feet, offer a hand on the more difficult parts and make sure nobody is left behind. It’s a group hike, and we never rush the slowest person.
On the way up, your guide shares the story that gives this mountain its soul.
Le Morne was a refuge for maroons , enslaved people who escaped the plantations and hid in the cliffs. You’ll hear how they lived, why this place became a symbol of resistance, and how it still matters deeply in Mauritian memory today. We talk about this history simply and with respect, as locals, not as a tourist show.
At the main viewpoint, your effort is rewarded with a wide, open panorama. There is time for photos, water and a quiet moment to just stand and take it all in.
After the break, we descend along the same path. Going down also needs focus, especially on the steeper sections, but your guide supports you step by step and keeps the group together until everyone is safely back at the starting point.
You finish the hike with tired legs, but with the feeling that you have not only “done Le Morne”, but really met it, through its nature, its story and its guides.
