➨ BABANI RECORDS
What is babani records:
An unexpected seduction. An instinctive call where it is impossible to resist percussive and bewitching melodies. Babani is the state of trance reached during a ceremony invoking ancestors’ spirits leading to a multigenerational gathering with a common denominator: The rhythms of the Indian Ocean helped by the ravane, this percussion instrument made of goat skin and which has its roots on the island of Mauritius.
Babani acts as collective which focuses on the transmission of the cultural heritage of the islands of the Indian Ocean while being rooted in Mauritius known as the key and star in this region.

Our goal is to promote this part of the world with a focus on:
TRADITION • ART • CULTURE
We do so through the restoration of music, images, art, photography, books, moving pictures and tales from the past.

DJ Sets:
We dig daily and work with producers around the world to create and curate the sound of the Indian Ocean. These shows are carefully put together by our selectors to invoke the spirit of Babani.

Extra info:
Founded by Avneesh Bacha, a Mauritian who’s been in the music and entertainment industry since 2000; Babani Records is the label of this collective platform.
Being on the ground, building strong relationships with some of the oldest generation of musicians and artists left on the island, our efforts are to preserve the rhythm and authenticity whilst infusing and collaborating with the modern world.
The label focuses not only on new material but also reviving the old and forgotten tapes of the island.
We are the handshake from the Indian ocean to musicians who wish to collaborate and experiment with the unique rhythms of this part of the world.

The Sounds Of The Indian Ocean
The islands of the Indian Ocean have shared the ternary rhythm in their music, which notably played in 6/8 and 12/8 rhythms and has an associated dance form. it is understood to have Afro-Malagasy roots. Unique to these islands, the label focuses on the fusion and interpretation of this rhythm in today’s music.
Initial focus:
Mauritius - Sega / Seggae / Sagai / Segazz Rodrigues - Sega Tambour / Sega
Reunion Island - Sega / Maloya / Maloggae Chagos Islands - Sega
Other islands
Seychelles - Moutia Comoros Islands - Twarab Madagascar - Salegy

Our Ethos:
We carefully handpick producers who are keen to collaborate with the label. 3 years in the making, as everyone who’s on board is considered family and an advocate to represent and promote the sound of the Indian Ocean. Each producer is briefed about the project, what it entails, ie, learning and educating the rhythm to keep the soul of music alive.

Babani aims to create a unique material that is new but yet keeps the essence of the traditional sega and maloya.

As much as the music matters, we focus strongly on the visual side of things and this is where the collective supports the label: 50% MUSIC - 50% VISUALS
Our communication of heritage is important to stay true through its visual representation and how it’s perceived.
All artists on board have fair trade and are not left in the dark about all releases and who is doing what. We learn from each other.
